Dangers of Spring Breaks

Reasons spring breaks are dangerous for students in the United States

For most students in the United States, spring break is a thrilling time, and they all look forward to it. They see it as a chance to relax and spend time with family and friends, and they can take a break from schoolwork before going back to wrap up the semester. The students participate in various activities, and most feel like it will last for eternity. Most students spend time partying in bars and clubs as others travel to multiple places for enjoyment. Although spring break is fundamental to students, several dangers arise during this period. Binge drinking has been the most concerning activity that most students take part in, which has undesirable results like accidents. This paper further expounds on why spring breaks are dangerous to students.

Drinking has become a ritual for several students during spring breaks. The greatest danger of spring breaks has been associated with excessive drinking. Alcohol-related deaths and injuries increase during spring breaks. Alcohol not only causes long-term effects on the body but also causes grave injury or death to not only the person drinking but also to the individuals around them. There have been reported cases of youths falling off high buildings while drunk and others dying or getting severe injuries after being involved in road accidents while intoxicated. Alcohol poisoning is also a common danger to students during spring breaks. Consuming high amounts of alcohol, which is commonly done by students, within a short period leads to alcohol poisoning. This leads to one experiencing a shortage of breath, vomiting, and psychological confusion. Those who drink to the point of passing out are at risk of choking on vomit, which could result in death by asphyxiation. Although the person is lucky and survives, they suffer a long-term brain injury due to alcohol overdose. Students are, therefore, encouraged to take note of alcohol poisoning symptoms since they are clear and seek medical attention instantly to save lives. An increase in risky sexual behaviors has also been observed during spring break. Most of the students are driven into this after drinking and experimenting other drugs. They have experiences like having sex unconsciously without protection and having sex with manifold partners. Other than that, sexual assault has been reported following excess alcohol intake. These activities have grave consequences like unwanted pregnancy and transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. To avoid all these risks, students should regulate alcohol consumption.

In addition to that, heat exhaustion is a risk during spring breaks. Despite the short spring holiday, most students travel to sunny destinations. Exposure to excess sunlight for a prolonged period may cause excessive sweating, rapid heartbeat, and cramps. This heat exhaustion is life-threatening, especially to those participating in vigorous activities like walking long distances and playing games like volleyball in tropical areas. The youths are encouraged to stay hydrated and carry sunscreen during their trip to prevent heat exhaustion. They should also spend time, especially in the afternoon in, doors or cool settings.

Drowning has also been a reported problem during spring breaks. Swimming in pools or at the beach with friends is a fun-filled moment for students. Unfortunately, failure to follow the correct guidelines for swimming has led to the drowning of several youths during spring breaks. Some of the cases reported are for those who go swimming while drunk or high on other drugs. There also have been cases of students drowning while fishing or when traveling on cruise ships. Drowning takes place when one’s lungs get filled with water. In most cases, very few individuals survive. It is therefore essential to be conscious of water safety to get rid of the danger of drowning. The students are encouraged to keep check on the weather while going for activities in water bodies and have life jackets on while fishing or ship cruising. During swimming, they are encouraged to always be near their friends to remain safe and avoid drinking or using drugs before going swimming.

Despite these dangers, spring breaks are very important to students and the break is not certainly to blame rather should be what the students choose to do. This is the reason it is necessary to give them safety tips to avoid the dangers. These tips include staying in safe places, having the right company of friends, dating safely, and drinking responsibly.
